I received my Letter of Acceptance. What now?

Prepare your documentation:

  • Air Ticket;
  • Visa (Student Visa (PT-BR: Visto de Estudante) VITEM IV);
  • CPF (Individual Registration Number) – do it online in advance;
  • Health insurance with funeral repatriation clause (“Brasil Receptivo”, insurance for foreigners), which must be purchased before your trip;

  • accompanying you to the Federal Police on the scheduled day to deliver the necessary documentation for the CRNM.

TEMPORARY VISA IV – STUDENT VISA

What it is: Temporary Visa IV is a mandatory authorization for all foreigners who wish to study at a Brazilian university.

Who can get it: It can be granted to any foreign student who intends to come to Brazil on a temporary basis, without the intention of immigrating or engaging in paid work.

How it works: This visa authorizes the foreigner to attend a specific course at a specific educational institution.

Where to apply: at the Brazilian Consulate or Embassy in the country of origin.

Validity: It may be valid for up to one (1) year (as stated in the Letter of Acceptance) and may be extended for the same period, multiple times, during the duration of the program. The extension request must be submitted to the Federal Police Department at least thirty (30) days before the end of the stay.

Important: When a student is selected to enroll in a regular master’s (two-year) or doctoral (four-year) program, they do not need to renew their visa annually but must maintain legal status through the issuance of the National Migration Registry Card (CRNM). Learn more about the RNM on the Brazilian government’s website.

Required documents: consult the Consulate General of Brazil in your country of residence and request a complete list of documents required to obtain a Student Visa, as it may vary.

Important information:

Once the visa has been granted, foreign students have 90 days to enter Brazil and, from then on, 30 days to register with the Federal Police Department in the city where they live.

Student visa holders are prohibited from engaging in paid work, under penalty of a fine, notification, or expulsion.

Attention: find out about the correct type of visa! Brazilian law does not allow visa changes once you are already in the country.
