HISTORY
The establishment of the Postgraduate Program in Journalism, in 2012, was the result of a process of consolidation of research as an important axis in UEPG’s Journalism graduation. The Journalism Master’s Program, Paraná’s first and Brazil’s second in the area, acknowledged from the very start of integrating graduation to post graduation keeping research lines with expressive participation of scientific initiation students and volunteer researchers. Through the research groups, the Program has still promoted integration between the areas of research and extension, besides broadening partnerships with civil society entities, professional and research institutions in Brazil and abroad. Such trajectory, towards the qualification of Journalism research, resulted in the acceptance of the Doctorate’s course (APCN 416/2023), which is in the implementation stage in Ponta Grossa State University.
THE JOURNALISM COURSE
The Ponta Grossa State University’s Journalism course was created in 1985, focused on the teaching dimension. From the 1990’s, academic formation starts integrating teaching, research and extension activities.
In 1991, the laboratory newspaper Foca Livre starts being produced by the students for circulation in printed format, still going in the local community. The newspaper is the longest-running product of the course, bringing public interest news as it innovates in grading models and follows the evolution of print journalism.
The course begins the research trajectory that shapes UEPG’s Journalism formation, with the first scientific initiation projects in 1996. Since then it keeps opportunities for students to take part in research groups and projects, voluntarily or with scholarships, which provides graduates with the foundations of their academic formation and the broadening of working horizons in teaching.
With the arrival of the new millennium, the changes in labor market impulse adaptations in the course’s pedagogical project, in order to emphasize the practical aspects of the profession. From 2003, the course starts offering opportunities of extension formation, through projects that value the partnerships with the community and social movements in the city and the region. The extracurricular activities, besides stimulating the development of skills that involve journalistic production, provide the students with conditions to broaden their sociocultural repertoire.
Throughout its 40 years, the course has already graduated over 1000 journalists. Some names who hold relevance in Journalism, as well as in region and nationwide professional and academic entities, such as FENAJ, SindiJor, Abraji, SBPJor, Abej, Intercom Rede Folkcom, Rede Alcar, among others. The course is an important reference in specific formation in Journalism in the country.
By carrying out a professional formation focused on the articulation of teaching, research and extension, UEPG’s Journalism course displays a difference which is unveiled in the expressive academic production of professors and students and in the representative laboratorial and extensionist production, developed in partnership with various sectors of the civil society.
