Uncelebrating Coups

The Uncelebrating Coups Cycle, which had its first edition in 2019 with the title “Challenges of the Public University in the Defense of Human Rights: Uncelebrating Coups!” is a joint initiative of postgraduate programs at the State University of Ponta Grossa – UEPG (Education, Language Studies, Applied Social Sciences, Journalism, Professional History), the Center for Technology and Open and Distance Education, the UEPG Teachers’ Union and the UEPG Journalism Agency.

It was created with the objective of addressing the challenges of the conditions that characterize democratic relations, the democratic state, education and human rights, with the aim of fulfilling one of the tasks of the Public University, which is to reflect on the present in search of analyses on social problems that mark the current national and international context. Contemporary questions about the maintenance or withdrawal of social rights, constitutional achievements of citizenship and human rights in several countries around the world, combined with a growing structural crisis in the rule of law management models, have driven debate, professional reflection and the search for alternatives to a scenario of uncertainty that affects the vast majority of the population throughout Brazil. This perspective is associated with the challenge of de-celebrating coups against democratic systems (mainly that of March 31, 1964, which established a 21-year military dictatorship in Brazil).

Having been interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the precautionary measures implemented by the health, public order and education systems, the Cycle had two editions still in remote and hybrid format until its in-person resumption in 2023 at UEPG. In 2024, the fifth edition of the event not only proposed the uncelebration of the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Military Coup, but also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Direct Elections Now Campaigns (1984) and March 2 – UEPG (2004). To this end, the edition featured lectures and conferences by professionals and researchers specialized in the respective thematic axes that allowed for a broad and open public debate. The panels were held in the Grand Auditorium of the UEPG Central Campus. The event also featured a photography exhibition and screening (with debate) of current documentaries on the theme of the Cycle.
